Dassen Island has a rich history and in 1893 a lighthouse was erected, a crucial beacon on the Cape shipping route.
The first owner whose name can be linked with the farm Eijzerfontein, was Cornelius Heufke in 1732. The name “Yzer” is believed to be derived from the iron deposits in the drinking water. In 1937 Yzerfontein Seaside Estates applied for town status. On 22 July 1937 Yzerfontein was proclaimed a town.

50 Main Rd. Yzerfontein Tourism/ Die Vishuis is the oldest building in Yzerfontein, it was used as a storeroom for fish and salt.
Dassen Island is home to thousands of seabirds, penguins, rabbits and a rather speedy breed of tortoise. Dassen Island’s waters is also a popular feeding ground for whales.
People are not allowed to visit the island unless with special permission and then only allowed to walk on the road between the Dassen Island lighthouse and the buildings at Huisbaai.
The Island is protected and managed by Cape Nature. Boat trips around Dassen Island can be arranged for sight-seeing or for fishing.
