The town is situated on the northern corner of the largest and deepest bay in South Africa. This had made it the centre of the Sishen-Saldanha iron-ore project as well as a naval training base. The harbour also plays an important role in the import and export for the industries of the region.
But above all Saldanha is popular among holiday-makers with the emphasis on water sports. To accommodate visitors the town offers opportunities for yachting, fishing, deep sea diving, whale and bird watching and hiking. Accommodation varies from hotels, guesthouses, self-catering to private homes, guest lodges, caravan parks and camping sites.
Saldanha Bay was formerly known as Hoedjiesbaai and was discovered by the Portuguese. Saldanha Bay harbour was utilised throughout World War II.
