Paternoster

159km from CT

The charming fishing village of Paternoster is one of the oldest coastal towns along the West Coast. Over the years Paternoster has bravely held on to its heritage and simple ways. The town remained a fishing village, but locals also welcomed the prospects of tourism.

Be mesmerized by the fishermen’s colourfully painted ‘bakkies’ (boats) going out to sea, Paternoster’s pristine beaches, and the white West Coast-style cottages dotting the shoreline. Round pale boulders protrude from a horizon of cobalt water and seagulls circle the sky, while life in Paternoster drifts on at an unhurried pace. Paternoster offers watersport activities such as; canoeing, kayaking, snorkeling, and boat trips.

Paternoster, meaning “Our Father” derives its name from the prayers of ship-wrecked Portuguese sailors. On 23 October 1910, the Lisboa ran aground on Soldiers Reef near Paternoster. The wreck of the Lisboa is particularly interesting because it was the first occasion that radio telegraphy was used to summon help by a ship in distress on the South African coast.

Sightseeing

Cape Columbine Lighthouse

As far as lighthouses go, Cape Columbine is young. Built only in 1936, it was the last manned lighthouse constructed, and it rests on a windswept coastline within the Columbine Nature Reserve, just five kilometres outside of the fishing village of Paternoster.

Fauna & Flora

Cape Columbine Nature Reserve

It is the furthest westerly destination in the Western Cape. The reserve, which includes Tietiesbaai, stretches over 263ha along the Cape West Coastline. The vegetation is typical West Coast Veld, ranging from fynbos to Karoo succulents and between August and September the scenery becomes a bright tapestry of wild flowers.

In 1973 the area was declared a nature reserve and visitors will note that this rocky coastline remains untainted by development. Guests to the Reserve are drawn here for the open space, the beauty of the unique landscape and the sightings of dolphin and whales.

What makes the area even more unique are the huge rocks that sit just inside the bay, where one of the two campsites to choose from, lies very close to water and giant boulders which makes it the ideal spot for the fishermen and divers.

Beautiful hiking trails and unforgettable sunsets right on the Atlantic Ocean. Camping doesn’t get much better than this.
