Paternoster: Timeless Charm Along a Working Coastline

Just 159 km from Cape Town, Paternoster is a historic fishing village known for its coastal beauty, heritage, and unhurried way of life.

A Village That Time Has Preserved

The charming fishing village of Paternoster is one of the oldest coastal towns along the West Coast. Over the years, Paternoster has bravely held on to its heritage and simple ways. The town has remained a fishing village, while locals have also welcomed the opportunities of tourism.

Coastal Beauty in Every Direction

Be mesmerised by the fishermen’s colourfully painted ‘bakkies’ (boats) heading out to sea, Paternoster’s pristine beaches, and the white West Coast-style cottages dotting the shoreline. Rounded pale boulders protrude from a horizon of cobalt water, while seagulls circle above and life drifts on at an unhurried pace.

Adventure by the Sea

Paternoster offers a range of watersport activities, including canoeing, kayaking, snorkelling, and boat trips, making it ideal for both relaxation and exploration.

Stories Carried by the Sea

Paternoster, meaning “Our Father,” derives its name from the prayers of shipwrecked Portuguese sailors. On 23 October 1910, the Lisboa ran aground on Soldiers Reef near Paternoster. The wreck is particularly significant, as it marked the first time radio telegraphy was used to call for help by a ship in distress on the South African coast.
