A Lighthouse with a Story

Dassen Island has a rich history, and in 1893 a lighthouse was erected, serving as a crucial beacon on the Cape shipping route.

A Town Rooted in History

The first owner whose name can be linked with the farm Eijzerfontein was Cornelius Heufke in 1732. The name “Yzer” is believed to be derived from the iron deposits in the drinking water. In 1937, Yzerfontein Seaside Estates applied for town status, and on 22 July 1937, Yzerfontein was officially proclaimed a town.
