Probably the most popular destination on the coast, Langebaan is a great base from which to explore the region, and the sheltered lagoon makes for fantastic water sports, especially windsurfing, kite surfing, and sea kayaking. The town has a truly laid-back, beachy feel. To quote a local: “There is nowhere in Langebaan you can’t go barefoot.”
Langebaan is one of the oldest towns in South Africa, with a history dating back more than 400 years. It has an archaeological history of a few million years. Twelve kilometres east of the farm Elandsfontein, a fossilised skeleton was found that dates back to the Stone Age.
Langebaan was officially established in 1870 on the farm Geitenmelksfontein and it is speculated that the town was named after the meandering dirt road behind the sand dunes that lead to the original homestead at Lynch Point.
Unlike typical lagoons where fresh water rivers enter the sea, the Langebaan Lagoon is a saltwater lagoon formed throughout millenniums by the rise and fall of the ocean. The lagoon is a world Ramsar site, meaning that it is a site with enormous global significance regarding wetland bird species. Migrant waders from the northern hemisphere return to the lagoon’s salt marshes annually during summer, while thousands of sea birds perch on secluded islands – a bird watcher’s paradise!
The Langebaan lagoon is the heart of the West Coast National Park and has much to offer the visitor such as: fauna and flora, awe inspiring views of the lagoon and Atlantic ocean, picnic sites, whale watching, mountain bike trails, bird watching, archeology, game viewing, kite boarding, kayaking, history and fossils.
Throughout winter the rain revives the earth and beneath the top soil, thirsting for the first downpour, lay the seeds of the most gorgeous flowers of every hue. During August and September, the West Coast sheds its dowdy summer disguise to display its gorgeous bright and colourful spring attire. This area is only open during August and September every year, managed by the West Coast National Park.
In Postberg there are also picnic \ braai and toilet facilities at Plankiesbaai which looks out on the Atlantic and at Uitkyk which looks out on the Langebaan lagoon and town.
The best time to visit the beach is in the mornings as the wind tends to pick up in the afternoon.
