Vredenburg is the commercial and transportation hub of the ‘West Coast’ and is centrally situated near Saldanha, Paternoster, Velddrif, Langebaan, Jacobsbaai and St. Helena Bay. Vredenburg is also the main medical hub with both the Provincial Hospital and the Life West Coast Private Hospital, various specialists and doctors’ offices situated in Voortrekker Street.
The town was established in 1875 initially around the Dutch Reformed Church, the oldest building in Vredenburg. The corner stone was laid on 22 January 1872 by dominee Neethling. On 15 September 1875 the church was inaugurated and the town’s name changed to Vredenburg. It was formerly known as Twisfontein or Prosesfontein.
